A saiyan from the planet Vegita, Goku was sent to Earth as a child. Although his mission was to destroy all life on the planet, a severe jolt ot the head caused him to become the planet's defender. After being killed in the battle against his brother, Raditz, he trained under King Kai. He was brought back to life by Shenron, and defeated the saiyan Nappa with ease, but the powerful Vegeta survived.
On the trip to Namek to revive his friends, Goku trained at one hundred times normal gravity and nearly reached the power of a super saiyan! After a battle with Captain Ginyu, he recovered in a spectial machine and, being a saiyan, became stronger. A battle with Frieza, and the explosion of his best friend, finalized his super saiyan transformation! After Frieza was defeated, Goku trained in space for some time. Upon his return to Earth, he met up with Vegeta's future son, Trunks. He was warned of androids, and a deadly heart disease that he was destined to die from! Fortunately, Trunks brought back a cure, but an unforseen danger emerged, Cell! After abosorbing and assimilating the androids, Cell announced "The Cell Games" to find a fighter to challenge him. Goku trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with his son Gohan, who became a super saiyan. After Goku sacrificed himself to stop Cell from blowing up the planet by self-detonation (which afterwords, Cell regenerated after blowing up King Kai's planet) Gohan defeated him.
This time Goku decided to stay dead, but fought on in the Other World Tournament. He fought valiantly and made it to the final round against Pikon, but both were disqualified for touching the ceiling. He came back to Earth for a day to fight in the Martial Arts Tournament seven years later, but ended up helping fight Majin Buu. After Vegeta is turned mostly back to evil, Goku fights him for a while, but they end up stopping to go fight Buu. When they were about to go, Vegeta knocked him out, and went to fight Buu himself. He fights well, but is pounded to a pulp and even fails when he blows himself up.
